Walmart throws around its growing weight in our food system
Thanks to Grist, I recently came across the infographic below, which was put together by Stacy Mitchell of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance. It details the large and growing influence that mega-retailer Walmart has in the American food system. Even if you never set foot in a Walmart, you and your neighbors are feeling its effects. As such, the infographic is well worth a read, so check it out.
Despite the extra cost on occasion this is exactly why my wife and I like to shop local with our Co-Op and the farmers market. We are lucky to have great sources here in Madison WI. It helps the farmers and allows us to eat healthier foods and we know where it came from. On a handful of time we got sad food but were able to take it right back to the farmer and they are happy to help. WE do not ask for anything when it does happen since we get that we are all have hard times, but it is nice to have the interaction and contact.
