House of Brews in business

There’s a new addition to the thriving Madison-area beer scene. The Isthmus and Madison.com both provided nice coverage recently of the House of Brews. (Earlier write-ups can be found at the Wisconsin State Journal and The Daily Cardinal.) This new brewery recently opened on Madison’s east side as a labor of love from former home brewer Page Buchanan. House of Brews’ first beer, a German Kölsch-style called Prairie Rye, is getting good reviews and is on tap now at a number of area bar-restaurants, including the Old Fashioned, The Coopers Tavern, and Alchemy. J will be happy to learn that a Scotch Ale is in the works that Buchanan hopes to have available in the next month or so.

Intriguingly, Buchanan eventually plans to offer a subscription plan whereby participants will get weekly or monthly half-gallon growlers of House of Brews’ latest offerings. These may include beers that will only be available either at the small on-site tasting room or as part of the subscription plan. According to the latest report in the Isthmus, subscriptions likely won’t be available until sometime in 2012, once other aspects of the business are up and running.
