The locavore movement isn’t limited to uppity urban centers. Though many a Wisconsin tavern may get its food from large distributors, the Branding Iron Roadhouse in Lime Ridge (population 169) is an exception. As Linda Falkenstein describes in the Isthmus, this tavern in northwestern Sauk County has set out to make high quality food its signature. Owners Lisa Buttonow and Steve Fearing pasture raise the beef themselves nearby. The 6 ounce, $3.75 (!) burgers are served on buns from a local Amish bakery and, for a measly 75 cents, topped with Carr Valley Cheese. I’m looking forward to having an excuse to head in their direction!
