Pete’s Fruit Market

Last week the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel ran an article about the newly expanded Pete’s Fruit Market on the near south side of Milwaukee. It’s a nice feature about a business that specializes in fresh produce, along with hot and cold deli items, Amish-raised chicken butchered on site, salsa and guacamole made daily in house, and ethnic foods that cater to the diverse urban neighborhood in which it’s located.

The Journal Sentinel piece also gives readers a tiny taste of this particular link in the modern food system, i.e., the independent retailer. For example, every day in the wee hours of the morning, owner Pete Tsitiridis makes the drive to Chicago to get the best produce at the best prices from wholesalers.
