I haven’t had a chance to check it out yet, but the new 4 & 20 Bakery & Cafe (as in “4 and 20 blackbirds baked in a pie”) has been getting some love over at madison.com recently. Last week they ran this feature from Samara Kalk Derby, and today they ran this glowing review from Stephanie Bedford. Here’s a tantalizing excerpt: “My slice of 4 & 20’s apple-cranberry was perfection in a slice, with a filling thick enough to hold its shape without crossing the line into jelly. The bakers at 4 & 20 use a light touch with sweeteners and seasonings, letting the locally sourced fruits taste utterly like themselves….. Even the edge of the crust, often impenetrably tough in my own pies, had the rich and tender texture of an extremely flaky cookie.” A friend has also been singing their praises on Facebook lately (check out the 4 & 20 page here), and even the UW student paper, The Badger Herald, has offered their high praise. Needless to say, J and I are hoping to make a visit there soon — I’ll report back when we do.
