Britain’s National Poultry Show gives good egg

One of my favorite things at the Wisconsin State Fair is checking out the cool varieties of chickens. (The accompanying photo shows just one of the many breeds we saw when J and I visited the fair a couple years ago.)

So, thanks to a post from the edible geography blog, I was delighted to learn about the National Poultry Show put on by The Poultry Club of Great Britain.

Not only are chickens judged at the show, but so are eggs. For the interesting, sometimes puzzling details of how that works, head to the edible geography post.

For some nice pics of the show, check out this photo slideshow from The Guardian.

If those photos are too few in number for you, head to the website of Fancy Fowl poultry magazine (!) to check out the Champion’s Gallery, “a selection of ‘best in show’ winning chickens, ducks and eggs from shows right across the UK during 2012.”

Finally, if you want to see some amazing animals all year long, I recommend the Extraordinary Chickens calendar (which I had for several years), based on Stephen Green-Armytage‘s amazing book of the same name.
